I’ve typed it a dozen times this week, but it’s still true: If you were a Leaf fan in the mid-80s, you understand what Wendel meant. If you weren’t, then you never will.

I also remember talking to you on the phone the Easter weekend before Wendel got traded to Quebec. We were at the cottage and your brother and sister-in-law and I were in the process of spray painting the beer fridge in a Maple Leaf blue colour and I mentioned that we were cutting out a cardboard template of the Maple Leaf to put on the door and leave a white Maple Leaf crest in the middle of the door. You immediately insisted we also make a template for the number 17 to leave that number in white on the door as well. It was forever known as the “Wendel fridge” from then on! (kept the beer cold too!)
