It&#8217;s just loud."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a very interesting <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/business\/displaystory.cfm?story_id=9478233\" title=\"Digital cinema article.\">article<\/a> in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/index.html\" title=\"Comics for Keynesians\">The Economist <\/a>about the effect of digital technology on the motion picture industry, at the distribution\/exhibition end, rather than the more commonly discussed production end.\u00a0 It is well worth a read, but I suspect you will agree that the author has obviously tried too hard in his opening paragraph to articulate a broadly <em>meaningful<\/em> thesis:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>THERE is a scene in \u201cTransformers\u201d, a blockbuster that came out last week, in which a mobile phone turns into a homicidal robot. In its astonishingly loud way, <strong>the film is a meditation on the dangers posed by advanced technology<\/strong>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0418279\/\" title=\"Robots in disguise.\">Transformers<\/a>?\u00a0 The two hour and twenty-three minute montage of stuff getting blowed up by homicidal robots?\u00a0 A &#8220;meditation&#8221; on anything?\u00a0 Puh-lease.\u00a0 This like suggesting that &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0102216\/\" title=\"The Cinema Verite of John Goodman\">King Ralph<\/a>&#8221; is a &#8220;Swiftian satire about the democratization of the monarchy&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many lessons can perhaps be learned here, chief among them being &#8220;Don&#8217;t rely on magazines about economics to provide you with insightful film criticism.&#8221;\u00a0 I rather suspect that the thesis in question is a poorly-veiled and badly executed attempt to rationalize, for an inquisitive editor, why the author was apparently busy attending a screening of this summer&#8217;s big-budget\u00a0blockbuster rather than churning out 1000 words on the Chinese widget industry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a very interesting article in The Economist about the effect of digital technology on the motion picture industry, at the distribution\/exhibition end, rather than the more commonly discussed production end.
