{"id":929,"date":"2009-07-06T22:44:02","date_gmt":"2009-07-07T02:44:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/heroesinrehab.ca\/blog\/?p=929"},"modified":"2009-07-06T23:52:09","modified_gmt":"2009-07-07T03:52:09","slug":"happy-trails-indeed-francois-beauchemin-is-a-maple-leaf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/heroesinrehab.ca\/blog\/2009\/07\/06\/happy-trails-indeed-francois-beauchemin-is-a-maple-leaf\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Trails, Indeed:  Francois Beauchemin is a Maple Leaf"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 367px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a title=\"Godzilla1954_01 by warwalker_2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/warwalker\/3696118795\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Godzilla\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3647\/3696118795_acf64e69ee_o.gif\" alt=\"Godzilla1954_01\" width=\"357\" height=\"388\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Francois Beauchmin Introduced at MLSE Press Conference<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Maple Leafs signed defenceman Francois Beauchemin, late of the Anaheim Ducks,\u00a0to a 4 year deal today.\u00a0 The deal brings an annual cap hit of about $3.8 million.<\/p>\n<p>I am a huge fan of this signing, for several reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It will be hilarious to watch Montreal&#8217;s Lollipop Guild of Cammalleri, Gomez and Gionta spontaneously pee their tiny little pantses when the Leaf defence pairings\u00a0stomp on to the ice this year.\u00a0\u00a0 Seriously, the Leafs have more beef on the back end than Oprah, J-Lo and <a title=\"Tomas Holmstrom is Swedish for &quot;Ass that Eclipses the Sun&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.barrymelroserocks.com\/2009-articles\/may\/an-open-letter-to-tomas-holmstrom.html.\" target=\"_blank\">Tomas Holmstrom<\/a> combined.<\/li>\n<li>The move gives Burke options.\u00a0 He can trade Tomas Kaberle for Jesus Christ and a (top five) first round draft choice or he can move some of the surplus second-tier blueliners now milling about the halls of the ACC, bumping into each other and the walls (such as Stralman, Van Ryn, Finger, Oreskovic, etc.) for more urgently required spare parts:\u00a0 &#8220;depth&#8221; (i.e. &#8220;crappy&#8221;) forwards or draft picks.<\/li>\n<li>Whatever the fate of Kaberle, adding a bona fide fearsome defender like Beauchemin on top of the earlier Mike Komisarek signing,\u00a0the addition of Garnet Exelby (via trade with Atlanta) and the continuing threat of Luke &#8220;The Human Eraser&#8221; Schenn ensures that no one will come within approximately sixty feet of the Maple Leafs&#8217; crease next season.<\/li>\n<li>This last fact ought to help in the &#8220;Monster&#8221; derby, the race to sign Swedish goaltender <a title=\"I am already pretty tired of &quot;monster&quot; as a nickname.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/nhl\/story\/?id=277752\" target=\"_blank\">Jonas Gustavsson<\/a>,\u00a0which ought to\u00a0help bring some depth to the goaltending position.\u00a0 This is a polite way of saying that\u00a0the Leafs&#8217; goaltending sucked donkey balls\u00a0last year.\u00a0 I love Curtis Joseph dearly, but\u00a0he did not play well, and an injured Vesa Toskala also turned in a performance best described as &#8220;weaksauce&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0Why does the\u00a0signing of <a title=\"Happy Trails, to you, until we meeeet agaaaaaiin...\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pensionplanpuppets.com\/2009\/7\/6\/939668\/beauchemin-a-leaf#17849867\" target=\"_blank\">Happy\u00a0Trails Frankie<\/a> help out in this regard?\u00a0 \u00a0Ask yourself: if you were a young Swedish lad considering which team to join in order to make your NHL debut, wouldn&#8217;t you kind of want to go to a club where the defencemen treat attackers like Godzilla treats Japanese public transportation vehicles?<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s back to the future, man.\u00a0 Back in the day, when the Leafs were the shit instead of just being &#8220;shit&#8221;, their style of play was always defined by hard-nosed defence.\u00a0 The Leafs of the 50s and 60s were more about Horton and Stanley than they were about any fancypants offence.\u00a0 It&#8217;s how we do things in the Blue &amp; White:\u00a0 crushing hip checks;\u00a0solid positional play; gutsy shot blocks;\u00a0 pick and shovel, physical\u00a0defence with a soup\u00e7on of elbows, facewashes and general bad-assery.\u00a0 Leaf fans have always been especially taken with the lunchpail brigade, but we are especially enamoured by\u00a0players who patrol the blueline this way.\u00a0 It has been this way since\u00a0of Red Horner and Bucko McDonald, through the\u00a0Horton and\u00a0Stanley era and more recently to guys like Sylvain Lefebvre, Dmitri Yushkevich and Danny Markov.\u00a0 This tradition is why Luke Schenn will be the captain of\u00a0your Toronto Maple\u00a0Leafs by 2012.<\/li>\n<li>I am really looking forward to seeing Beauchemin use his breath weapon to destroy Daniel Alfredsson.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Attaboy Burkie.\u00a0 I see the plan, and I like it.\u00a0 Watching the reaction to the Beauchemin and Komisarek signings in the <a title=\"Start tweeting, but don't be a jerk, use Tweetdeck\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#search?q=leafs\" target=\"_blank\">twitterverse<\/a> these past few days, I can tell you that your fanbase is definitely loving it too.\u00a0 (<strong>Side note<\/strong>:\u00a0 It was absolutely fascinating watching the Beauchemin signing in particular unfold via Twitter today;\u00a0 I saw a tweet that reported the signing, was able to confirm it via Sportsnet, then tweeted about the signing myself and watched as the news spread from person to person via re-tweets.\u00a0 Enjoying the salty tears of disappointment shed by\u00a0Habs fans despairing of a lost opportunity was especially enjoyable when experienced in real-time.\u00a0 In all seriousness, though, the revolution has come.\u00a0 This is the way we&#8217;re going to get our information about things from now on.)<\/p>\n<p>If the Leafs can&#8217;t land an elite scoring forward or two through trades this year (most likely immediate candidate for dispatch in this regard:\u00a0 Tomas Kaberle;\u00a0 dark horse trade bait:\u00a0 a rejuvenated and repaired Vesa Toskala), I am content to watch the young forwards like Tlusty, Grabovski, Bozak and Hanson try to make their way in the league.\u00a0 Some, if not most, of them will struggle and\/or fail, and the team will similarly struggle to score goals.\u00a0 We may continue to lose games, and lose them often.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m going to really enjoy watching this team play this year.\u00a0 There will be no easy nights for the Leafs&#8217;
