Storm Damage August 25, 2011, a set on Flickr.

Those trees along the north wall of that turkey barn? They used to have tops.

We had quite a storm last night around 9:30. Very strong winds for a short period of time, and protracted lightning/thunder. This morning, we discovered that we had several large trees down on the property.

These pictures were taken just down the road from our house. Apparently, Environment Canada is investigating reports of a possible tornado that tracked from Cambridge to Burlington; if so, I think it went right past our front door.

Thanking our lucky stars no one was hurt, and that the house and cars weren’t damaged.

  • Glad to see it was only flora that got hurt. Did EMJTJ manage to sleep through it? (or, being the baby that he is, is he really sleeping through anything? Calcifer will look at us sometimes as if to dare us, DARE US to try to omit a regularly scheduled nap. He will cut you.)

  • I have been hesitating a bit to respond to this. I don’t know how to say it without jinxing the hell out of it all; EMJTJ is a sleeping champion. I’m serious, if “sleeping” were an Olympic event, I have no doubt that we have the Michael Phelps of that event tucked away upstairs in a crib.

He was incredible. Spouse picked him up out of the crib just at the height of the storm. The power went out and, despite our best efforts to the contrary, there was a substantial amount of hubbub involved in getting him and four adults (Spouse’s parents were visiting us) into the designated “safe” area (the office, a room on the lower floor at the front of the house). Aside from occasionally stirring when someone accidentally shone a flashlight in his face, he snoozed undisturbed throughout. It is the way of his people.

Naps are an interesting subject for our l’il guy. From time to time, despite some fairly clear evidence to the contrary, he tells us that naps – morning naps in particular – are for suckers. This choice usually ends up getting regretted, mostly by Mommy and Daddy.

I confess I’ve been unable to keep up online – has Calcifer started crawling yet? I see from the pic (OMG CUTE, in an infantile Chuck Norris sort of way*) that he’s doing assisted stands. That’s our Boy’s big preference right now, much to the dismay of my aching back – hanging on to a willing adult’s hands while marching around the house.

*He doesn’t look anything like Chuck Norris. But that is a scary glare.

  • He’s actually a pretty happy guy — don’t let the glare fool you; it is his camera face, I think. No crawling, and I think that it’s frustrated him a bit, as he will locomote by rolling, rolling, rolling until he gets stuck on a wall/under furniture. For the latest trick, he started sitting up from a roll (I can’t do that. How does he do it?).

Not to flog a specific product, but this class of item has turned out pretty good for us (and our backs) when we were training figgy to walk. Now that Calcifer has inherited it she keeps pulling it away from him, of course (ours has an automobile motif, not the Jurassic theme shown here):

Sleeping is great, especially for the parents, as it allows you to hang on to a bit of sanity. I know I am not at my best unreadiness when awoken suddenly in the night: I will thrash about a bit and fall back asleep (which earns glares from theVet in the morning).

    • We have a similar device; he’s not yet able to use it, because he’s really unsteady. No side-to-side balance whatsoever, really, and I’m pretty sure the thing would just zoom forward leaving him to fall on his face, something Daddy is not prepared to see just yet (though I know it’s comin’!).

      Sleeping: underrated!
